Hi, I’m Lesly! A Digital Media Innovation student at Texas State University, with a minor in Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
As a digital media student, I am passionate about creative storytelling and visual design. When I’m not working on digital projects, I enjoy bringing creativity to life with physical materials by making collages, decorations, and large-scale designs by hand. I love projects that allow me to combine both worlds, digital tools like Canva and video editing software. My career aspirations are to work in social media as a content manager or in web design to help improve website accessibility. I really enjoy crafting, such as scrapbooking and collaging, and collecting physical media like DVDs.
I decided to attend Texas State as it was really the only school I got to tour. In my junior year of high school, I wasn't quite serious about college, one factor being that I felt completely lost about the college process since I am a first-generation student. During my senior year, I had great advisors that helped me become motivated for an experience in higher education and college life. I really liked how nature oriented the campus felt when I visited, and being from Houston, a small town, felt perfect to move into. In high school, I was studying dentistry and even graduated as a certified dental assistant. However, this wasn't something I wanted as a career.I first chose to study computer science, and after a few classes, I realized this was not what I wanted to do. I like to be creative, and I knew I wanted to do something in website design. In computer science, the rules are so strict for a reason but there was hardly any creative freedom. After a panel I attended in Austin, people talked to us about how they found their careers and recommended doing something you love to find your passion. After this panel, I talked to my advisor and switched my major to digital media innovation, and I'm so glad I did.
In my major, I have been able to code in a friendly coding language, and I am meeting my goals to become a web designer. As I continue to take electives and other courses, I truly enjoy all the classes I have taken. I take courses that are not even perfectly aligned with web design, but they are still such helpful skills that allow me to have multiple career opportunities. For instance, I took a social media class, and right now I am taking a video production class where we learn how to run a TV studio. I love that my major has us complete so many projects that we can use to show future employers.
