One of my hobbies is creating collages. I love doing anything craft-related, but collaging is my favorite activity. I first started by printing out photos of my family and friends and creating collage frames to decorate my room. I like adding stickers, washi tapes, and cutting out the photos into fun shapes. But once we hosted more crafting events at my job, I was able to sit down and browse through all the magazines.
I like to collect magazines now to create my physical collages. When I go thrifting, I always browse through the media section and find some amazing, interesting pieces. I can always envision what theme or what I’d like to create with each of those pieces. And then I get home and forget about it—oops! When I do remember why I love to collage in the first place, I get back into it and have so much fun just crafting and watching TV. This is how I destress. I used to be pretty uptight about where I wanted things to be placed, but now I have a system. I look through the magazines, find all the pieces I want, cut them out, and glue the pieces down one by one, trusting the process. My collages wouldn’t always turn out the way I wanted, especially when I was trying to plan everything out, so this method works much better.
As I prefer to create physical collages, I also enjoy making digital ones. I usually do this to improve my design skills and to have sample ad examples added to my portfolio. The one I created below is a spec ad for Challengers, one of my favorite movies. I made this using Canva. One downside of creating things digitally is that there are so many options and variations for each element. Infinite colors, fonts, sizes, and styles to choose from. It honestly makes it more difficult and stressful. I work best when I am given limited options, I feel like I make the most out of it.
